Book 2 in the Socket trilogy. A year has passed since the Paladin Nation was exposed to the public. Their mission is still to protect humanity from whatever may threaten them. Previously, it was the human duplications, but now that they've been extinguished their biggest challenge is dealing with the complications of public image. Socket Greeny, now 17 years old, has been a Paladin cadet for the past year and is nearing the final test. But that's the least of his problems. He's trying to live two lives one as a superhero while hanging onto his normal life. While fearlessly dealing with his masochistic trainer, he's trying to salvage his deteriorating relationship with his girlfriend back home. But Socket's greatest challenge is to find his true enemy. He discovers that fear has many faces.

The Training of Socket Greeny finds young Socket deep into his Paladin Training. We quickly learn that all is not well. Socket is feeling the strain of trying to be two people, the warrior looking for his untapped potential and the normal teenager who misses his girlfriend. Once again the author has done a masterful job of giving Socket a believable teen voice. Even when he was going through some real mind bending action, I never lost sight of who he was.Sequels are hard. An author can no longer count on dazzling the reader with world building, creatures, and spiffy science. These things have already been established in the first book, so sequels have to make a go of things based on a good story and solid character development. This one certainly does that. The tension runs thick throughout the book as once again an old enemy has returned to lay claim to the human race. At what point must Socket sacrifice who he is in order to fulfill his obligations? It's riveting reading, and while there is plenty of battle action, it's the more cerebral portions of the book that I found myself drawn to. Socket's search for awareness and realization was nicely portrayed. The addition of Pon, his teacher, added an unexpected and welcome depth to the story.
In the interest of not spoiling anything, I won't speak much to the ending except to say it brought all the story elements and characters together in a way that was totally unexpected. Congratulations to the author for not leaving us hanging off a cliff, telling a complete story, and offering up a middle book that was not full of filler. He gives us a story that takes his characters to new heights and will leave you pondering the ending long after you are done with the final page. Start with The Discovery of Socket Greeny, and then travel on with Socket in his further adventures. I'm off to look for the next one. This one is an enthusiastic recommend for both teens and adults.

The Training of Socket Greeny Tony Bertauski 9780982845226 Books Reviews
It was really good enjoyed the plot alot
Cool story about a boy who seems to be extra special. I really liked the trilogy. Wish there was more.
A little disappointing as to how fast it went, but never letting you see a few steps ahead! Going for the 3rd now!
Excellent Read. Very good story line and follow thru. Interesting and entertaining. A very good read. I'm 70 yrs. old and enjoyed it a great deal.
I found it enjoyable. I thought it was better then the first book in the series.Lots of action. I think I will read the next book in the series.
Pace was good. I did not need a recap of things, as I just completed the first book. These are short works (which I like).
One shortcoming the character in first person speculates for us what is happening, or what had happened by metaphysically going through others' perspectives. By doing this, the author makes other characters much less active. (It didn't help that the Paladins were so reserved by nature.) Bursts of great action, and also great world building.
Another sold story based on the emerging capabilities of Socket Greeny. In this book Socket is 17, he is already a hero, and he's being trained to fully realize his abilities as a Paladin. Naturally, Socket has his Mr. Miyagi named Pon whose sole purpose is to push him, most time painfully, into developing his powers while guiding him on how to control his abilities. Another enjoyable book that compelled me to purchase and finish the authors third Socket Greeny novel The Legend of Socket Greeny. These books are a lot of fun.
