There is one word to describe this book: AMAZING. Simply, simply amazing. Of course I'm completely thinking this book is super creepy--dolls creep me out fyi. So this book is about a girl named Alexis and her family. Her little sister Kasey is slowly becoming possessed by an evil spirit, Sarah, who had died when she was a little girl and now her spirit lives in her really creepy doll. Now Kasey is obsessed with dolls, her room is filled with so many of them [hence the creepy part of her childhood]. So Sarah is trying to kill the family members of the girls who accidentally killed her. With every book comes a hero, Alexis saves her sister and the world from the possessed doll. Alexis also forms new friendships while even mending old ones and she even finds a love interest. This book was written really well and I like that I took a risk with this book.Tags : Amazon.com: Bad Girls Don't Die (9781423108764): Katie Alender: Books,Katie Alender,Bad Girls Don't Die,Disney-Hyperion,1423108760,Family - Siblings,Horror,Social Themes - Dating & Sex,Demoniac possession;Fiction.,Haunted houses;Fiction.,Sisters;Fiction.,Children's Books - Young Adult Fiction,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Demoniac possession,Fiction,Fiction-Horror,Haunted houses,Horror & Ghost Stories,Horror Ghost Stories (Young Adult),JUVENILE,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Fiction Action & Adventure General,Juvenile Fiction Love & Romance,Juvenile Fiction Paranormal,Juvenile Fiction Paranormal, Occult & Supernatural,Juvenile Grades 7-9 Ages 12-14,Mysteries, Espionage, & Detective Stories,Paranormal,Sisters,TEEN'S FICTION HORROR & GHOST STORIES,United States,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Family Siblings,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Horror,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Dating & Sex
Bad Girls Don't Die Katie Alender Books Reviews
The prose wasn't oh-my-god-where-have-you-been-my-whole-life perfect but it was so enthralling and fit so perfectly with the story being told I couldn't help but get sucked into the life of Alexis, a fifteen year old girl who has difficulty dealing with other people because, according to her, they're always trying so hard to be something they're not and they end up never sounding real.
I could easily devote a whole essay on how much I liked Alexis - even though it took her eons to figure out something that I'd got from the get-go, but hey, she didn't get a blurb of her own life - and how different she was from most other YA main characters. She wasn't a mary sue, nor was she one of those "anti-mary sues", girls so tough you can practically see their penises, no. Alexis is just a girl who's not very easy to be dealt with, but then again, neither are most people around her. And when her little sister Kasey starts acting weird - weirder than usual - she realizes something, something dangerous, is up.
I'll stop here because I could gush about this book all day long and not make my point across, so I'll just say that if you like YA's, or if you just like horror or even if you just like awesome main characters that act like real people, THEN YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO READ THIS BOOK RIGHT HERE. NOW. READ IT NOW. I DARE YOU.
Alexis is a pink-haired outcast. She may not have many friends, but she spends most of her time immersed in her photography. At night, both Alexis and Kasey notice a faint glow that can't be explained. It seemed to have been in the house, but through the viewfinder of her camera, Alexis realized that the light wasn't getting larger- it was getting closer. The next night, it seems as though her neurotic, oversensitive little sister, Kasey, changed. She's more put together and begins to speak differently.
Alexis can feel something different about the old house they've lived in since they were children, as if there was another presence. When strange things begin to happen, she pushes them aside, figuring that her sister had just gone off the deep end. Eventually, she realizes that there's more at stake than she realized. Lives are being threatened and she has to get as much information as she can muster up in order to save the people she never thought she'd get involved with.
I was torn whether to give this book a 4 or a 5 for rating. I enjoyed it a lot. It was a fast-paced read and the author kept the story interesting, with entertaining characters, dialogue, and unexpected twists and turns in the plot. Around the time I picked this book up, I didn't hear much about it and looking at the summary, I thought it was just about a creepy doll. Call me slow, but it didn't occur to me that it was about possession until someone mentioned it. There were even parts in the book where I had to stop reading just to gather what had just happened.
This was the perfect read for Halloween (especially since it took place in October, as well). I wouldn't call it a scary book, but it definitely had its creepy moments. You know, the ones where you check over your shoulder or snuggle a little closer to your cat. Or maybe that's just me.
I will definitely be looking into the sequel, From Bad to Cursed.
This was a surprisingly good read, geared towards a younger audience, I liked that it played up the suspense and frightening aspects, without relying too much on gore-as some horror novels do. And yes, even I as an adult, I found this to be creepy, but it kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. I seldom read YA anymore, having long ago outgrown the genre, but this was recommended to me by my niece, who usually doesn't like horror, but she's not a big reader in general, and it's rarer still, to hear her so enthusiastic about a book. So I decided to check this one out, and it is definitely worth the time to read and one I'd definitely recommend to fans of horror, of any age.
