DEAD BODY LANGUAGE A Connor Westphal Mystery Book 1 edition by Penny Warner Literature Fiction eBooks
Our heroine owns and prints out a weekly newspaper. She also writes a weekly mystery puzzle for the paper. She has an admirer in the sheriff's office. A detective has an office in the same building as our heroine. The detective has a half brother who shows up unexpectedly. The death of a woman in town had asked our heroine to find a half sister. The detective has disappeared trying to get the same info the heroine was asked to get. So off go the brother and heroine to the town where the suspected half sister lives. Sad to say, they find the body listed as a John doe. Soon we have two more deaths and no one closer to the murderer. Clues keep coming up but not enough to tie all the ends. Our deaf heroine is close to the solution and gives both the hero and the sheriff a call as to where she's going and to meet her there. This is not a fast paced, suspenseful novel, however you will enjoy this suspense there as well as how functional the deaf heroine is as well as the slow romance building. Yes, I tried putting the clues together-with no success. I'm sure with the next reading, I'll be able to see how they bind together much better.Theila

DEAD BODY LANGUAGE A Connor Westphal Mystery Book 1 edition by Penny Warner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
While the writing or plot wasn't anything exceptional, I'm glad I gave this book a shot. I was intrigued by the idea of a deaf detective, and Ms. Warner did not disappoint. I could tell that she had done her research on the deaf community, as well as the struggles of those who cannot hear. Most people probably don't realize how exhausting a simple conversation can be when you have to focus intently on reading a person's lips (especially considering you'll only get about half the information), or the difficulty of placing a phone call.. Aside from her deafness, Connor is your typical nosy, reporter-turned-detective. She doesn't always know what she's doing (or when to mind her own business), but she means well. This book is worth a shot for people with an interest in the perspective of a member of the deaf community.
My primary interest, in choosing this book, was its deaf main character. Its well written, a good mystery, enough interesting characters, and Connor's deafness is a frequent issue. I think many folks will learn about being deaf in recent (though maybe not current) times. But Deaf Culture seems missing. She is alone in this town, by choice. There are no other deaf folks
there, and she chose to move there (yes, there was a reason given). This means no presentation of the deaf community.
I do think Ms Warner did a good job of presenting a brave, positive deaf character, and also did a good job of educating folks
on how relatively impossible and frustrating lip reading is.
I am going to buy more books in this series.
Conner Westphal inherits a newspaper and a defunct diner where she make her home in DEAD BODY LANGUAGE by Penny Warner.
For an accomplished author the edition has a few problems which have been mentioned in other reviews.
Conner has lived in a silent world since she was a small child and manages to make her way with special machines, notes, and lip-reading. Trying to write a mystery article on a cafe napkin for the paper she is distracted by a new occupant of the office next to her own. Dan Smith says he is the brother of Boone Joslin, the PI, who operates the office -- Boone is missing.
Lucy Penzance, a recent widow arrives at the office to run an ad to find a missing "sister." Lucy is later discovered lying across her husband's grave. At first glance it looks like suicide, but the corner's findings alert Sheriff Elvis Mercer to a murder.
Under the guise of doing an article for her paper Conner discovers surface apperances are never what they appear. She endangers herself by learning too much about the connections among several citizens who don't want the truth to appear in the local newspaper.
A fun read using a resourceful protagonist.
Nash Black, author of SANPRINTS OF DEATH.
I am a big fan of other books by this author so I was excited to start reading this series. I thought the mystery was a good one. Lots of twists and turns. Some parts of the story were confusing but I think this was due to poor editing than actual writing. Many words were misspelled, letters were dropped/added, and it seems whenever there was a word with a "r-n" spelling (ex. such as corner), the r-n was replaced by an "m" (comer). Very confusing.
As some other reviewers have said, it was odd how the dog was introduced but then ignored. Connor worked long hours, sometimes staying away from home overnight, without ever making arrangements for the dog. The dog was a service dog but always stayed home alone. Connor did have a doggy door for her so at least she was able to go outside, but never seemed to need food or water.
It also seems like her teenage assistant was the one doing all the work. Her dream was to run a newspaper but it seems like Miah was the one doing all the work. Connor said the sheriff liked her because she gave a job to his "troubled" son, but Miah seemed to be the responsible and reliable one. He was the one holding the newspaper together.
I think the series could be interesting. I'm interested enough to download the next one.
