What a fun book! I read this one aloud to my elementary school-aged kids, and they enjoyed it, too. You have to admit, there aren't too many middle grade books on cannibalism out there, lol. And the characters were funny and relatable. We enjoyed the historical note at the end that told what parts of the story were real, too. And as always, it's refreshing to read a book set in a part of the country where real people live but that doesn't get covered in the media much (ie Colorado).Tags : The Secret of Ferrell Savage [J. While I read incessantly, I'm not usually one for YA fiction. I'll pick one up every once in a while and quickly get bored with the same old, same old storylines and tired plots. Not so with The Secret of Ferrell Savage! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and at times carried it around the house with me so I could get in a few more paragraphs while, say, brushing my teeth. The characters are dynamic, likable, sweetly flawed and though they give each other grief, they generally treat each other well, something we ought to talk more about in fiction, both young and aged.
I can be picky about what I spend my time reading, so when I say I REALLY enjoyed this book, I mean it. Pick it up and read it with or without your kids- it's refreshing.
Our cousin's daughter who we purchased it for read it in one night and loved it!!!
As a parent and an avid reader, I give The Secret of Ferrell Savage the highest ratings. My ten year old daughter loved the book so much she read it twice. I read through it and found myself laughing with my daughter. Great book I would recommend to young readers and parents who love to read to their children.

What a fun to read story about sled races, first crushes, mean bullies--and cannibals! The subtle humor with the character names is quite creative. Loved this book!
Disclaimer I know the author, who is a wonderfully lovely person. However, my sons (ages 9 and 12 and big fans of the Wimpy Kid books) do NOT know the author and they LOVED this book. They ate it up (pun intended!) In fact, yesterday while riding in the car, my 12 year old said, out of the blue, "Hey Mom, that Ferrell Savage Book is cool." You can't get a better review than that!
This one kept me guessing. My 4th grade students found it to be a page turner. It flew around the class as word spread about this story. Lots of adventure but also lots to think about for kids.
From beginning to end, Ferrell's humor and up-beat attitude keep this story moving. The other characters add their own quirks and fun, as well, especially Mary, with your perfect serious foil to Ferrell's relaxed outlook. I think one of my favorite examples of the subtle humor was Ferrell's longing for meat. Highly recommended. )
