The Assassin and the Underworld A Throne of Glass Novella Throne of Glass series Book 1 eBook Sarah J Maas

This novella should have been called THE ASSASSIN AND THE TANGLED WEB OF AROBYNN HAMEL, but I guess it doesn't rollllll of the tongue the same way.

I really wish I could give you an accounting of the events that take place here unhindered by the knowledge of what's to come.

But I can't.

I read it too many times and it broke my heart too completely.

THE ASSASSIN AND THE UNDERWORLD is about what happens when Celaena returns to the Assassin's Keep after Arobynn beat her into unconsciousness and sent her to the desert.

Celaena arrives full of confidence and more than a little bit of self-satisfaction.

She succeeded in accomplishing her nearly-impossible-to-complete task. More than succeeded. Was sent home from the Red Desert with a fortune great enough to purchase her freedom.

When she struts into Arobynn's office, she has every intention of telling him, and leaving him.

Unfortunately . . . It doesn't work out that way.

Instead, she allows herself to fall back under his spell. Not fully, she's been made too wary for that, but enough that she becomes an unwilling accomplice in his nefarious plans one last time.

This is where we first see the depth of Arobynn's treachery.

I think I've been getting more into these novellas than the actual Throne of Glass. What can I say? I think I love Sam more than even Chaol, which is saying something.

Celaena is back from the desert and ready to take on Arobynn for what he did to her. Except when she gets home, Arobynn lures her in with a job that would free a bunch of slaves, and she caved. Between wanting her freedom, figuring out what if Arobynn has ulterior motives, doing this job, and Sam (does he have feelings for her? Could she have feelings for him? Celaena Sardothien doesn't have feelings!) her life is pretty busy.

This was definitely my favorite novella (so far). Celaena is smarter and actually more mature than in the last one, which made for a better read. I definitely ship her and Sam (if you can't tell) so this one made me happy. Although Arobynn is really making me mad. And Celaena is making me mad for listening to him >(

This one had a lot of action and suspense to it as well. I had already kind of guessed what was going on from the beginning though, and knew what had happened way before Celaena. So there was a lot of me screaming at her to stop being stupid and figure it out. So yes, it was slightly predictable, but not enough to ruin the story.

There was also definitely a lot more drama in this one. Between Celaena and Arobynn, Celaena and Sam, Celaena and Lyssandra… Celaena is just a very dramatic person. It's not bad drama (and I'm usually the person who hates it) but actually lends more of a dimension to the story.

Weirdly enough, I enjoyed this novella almost as much as the full-length novel Throne of Glass and would definitely recommend it to anyone who loved this series.

Now excuse me while I go read the next novella to find out what happens…
The hardest thing about reading these prequel novellas is I know what will happen to a few characters and I really like them so I don’t want to get to attached. But let’s face it Sam is pretty adorable, in an I can kill you kind of way, so it is impossible to not get a little attached to him.

Celaena is back from her time in the desert certain that she will pay off her debt and leave Arobynn. At least that was the plan until she sees him and he apologizes for beating her. It is complicated thing when someone saved your life and treated you like a daughter for so long.

This was another great tale centering mostly on Celaena finding a way to break free from Arobynn and become an independent young woman. She has looked to him for so long for reassurance and support but now her feelings for him have changed. Also changed, are the feelings she has for Sam and Celaena isn’t quite sure what to do with those.

Arobynn seems genuinely sorry for the way he treated her. He gives her gifts and a great contract for a job that is supposed to be to stop a slave ring from happening. But is it what it seems or something else entirely. The King of Assassins doesn’t seem like the sort to forgive and forget.

I love Sam in this novella. He really comes across as a three dimensional character and I love/hate that I know his fate. You can really see in this one all the ways Celaena will fight for those she loves and how what sacrifices she is willing to make. She has such a strong heart for someone trained to kill. I really like there love story and everything Sam tells her about his feelings for Celaena.

He brushed his lip against hers. “I love you,” he breathed against her mouth. “And from today onward, I want to never be separated from you. Wherever you go, I go. Even if that means going to hell itself, wherever you are, that’s where I want to be. Forever.”

This novella is another great glimpse into our assassin with a heart of gold. I’m reluctant to read the next novella just because the happiness can’t last and we all know it. But I also can’t wait to see how events led up to before Throne of Glass.
